History of Thomasville, PA

Thomasville is a city named after a state militia member, Major General Jett Thomas. The City is in Thomas County, Southwest of Georgia. For over 35 years, the residents of Thomasville were without proper road networks, but this lack did not hinder their success in creating a prosperous municipality through self-sufficiency.

In the year 1861, Thomasville saw an increase in production from their agricultural practices and their business systems took a new turn. It’s this revolution that saw Thomasville play an integral part during civil wars by providing a steady supply of foodstuff and other goods.

  1. Thomasville Accessibility and Affluent Settlers

    The construction of a railroad increased the town’s accessibility to traders from the North. Other people came for health-related solutions to pulmonary and heart diseases. The indigenous pine trees in Thomasville had a scent that many believed to cure such conditions.

    People from other cities also visited Thomasville for leisure activities such as hunting and fishing, as well as playing golf and cycling.     Electricity first came to Thomasville in 1889 when a group of private investors purchased and installed a small generator which had the capacity of lighting 50 bulbs. During the 1950s Thomasville city witnessed an upward surge in the consumption of electricity. Therefore, to curb this mounting pressure, in 1977 the City of Thomasville became one of the pioneering members of the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia. The membership allowed the residents to purchase electricity at a lower rate.

    The Historic Big Oak

    Interestingly, Thomasville is the home to a massive live oak tree fondly known as “the Big Oak.” the tree grew from small corn and has survived for close to 400 years.  The Big Oak has an attached Cam that takes people’s pictures uploads the images to the internet for viewing and sharing with friends. It is popularly known as a “historic tree” and a “place for gathering.”

    Thomasville prides itself in the Lapham-Patterson House which is a Victorian mansion preserved over the years for tours as well as the Thomasville History Centre which houses the entire history of Thomasville. Other attraction sites include Jack Hadley Black History Museum and the Thomasville Rose Garden in which the residents of Thomas County host their annual festivals.
