History of Abbottstown PA
Abbottstown is one of the oldest towns in Adams County having been established in 1753 by John Abbett who is its founder. The rate at which this town developed was contributed by the presence of rail services provided by Eastern Berlin railroad. By the mid-nineteenth century, the town had well-established drinking and eating establishments unlike other regions in the county.
Abbottstown was initially comprised of log houses that have since been modernized. To preserve its history, the founder’s house is still standing and has been restored though not to its original form. The town is said to have had a population of 538 in the early 1950s.

The town’s population has since grown though it is not densely populated. The 2000 census shows that the town’s population had all age groups with the females being more than their male counterparts. Church
The Saint John’s Lutheran is said to be the first church in this town. It is believed to have been established in the last century but burnt down in the ear 1829. The church was made of weatherboards and logs as that’s was the building materials available in those early days.
It is believed that the church was burnt down by the negroes who had just regained their freedom from a lockout. They had a purpose of revenging from the detention and managed to do so by destroying most of the church documentation. Though the altar cloth, communion cup and pitcher, and the stove pipe were retrieved from the burning church, old papers, books, and documents were destroyed.

Abbottstown sits on a 0.6 square miles piece of land at 39°53′8″N 76°59′10″W. The location is elevated and the ground descends in every direction making it mud free. From the early days to date, the town has splendid crops as its location favors plant growth.
